Shinri Tezuka & Sugar Crystal Art

Art is something that can bridge through each of our five human senses, but very rarely do we see a type of artform that culminates in the merger of multiple sensations to give us a beauty that can be felt, seen and tasted.

The passion-infused tradition of Amezaiku is the creation of realistic animal-inspired sugar sculptures for appreciation and consumption. One of the remaining few practitioners of this craft is Shinri Tezuka, a young master who pours his heart into the delight of his creativity.

Tezuka himself has to personally shift and mold the heated sugar candies into their crystal-like shapes using only his skill as an artisan and some special hand tools. He believes that there is no other way to do this correctly, whether by machine or commercial involvement, because the timeless craft requires a human touch to perfect and accomplish.

His work shows an amiable and light-hearted result, as commonly told by young and young-at-heart who find a jovial appreciation for the simple yet demanding beauty of his candy artistry.
